Sometimes, you have no concept where an idea will take you!

About two years ago, a friend of In Case of Crisis, as esteemed reputation expert and educator, observed that there was very little in the way of authoritative textbooks that examined crisis management best practices in the digital age.

The problem was that most of the many books on the subject adequately addressed the core principles of the preparation and response to emerging threats, but very few took into consideration the dizzying speed at which social media drives a crisis and the game-changing context of a digital communications world.

The person who made this observation to us was Ron Culp, a PR industry Hall of Famer, who is now Professional in Residence for the PR and Advertising Program at Chicago’s DePaul University.

In Case of Crisis got together with Ron to address the challenge.

In February of 2018, we published the 1st edition of an e-book, ‘The New Rules of Crisis Management in the Digital Age’, edited and introduced by Ron with five excellent chapters each contributed by a different expert in the crisis field.

A 2nd edition with three additional chapters from experienced crisis practitioners followed a few weeks later.

We had modest expectations of the e-book.

Ron had mentioned that 500 is a good sales target for a text-book. Our book was free to download, but we were not promoting it via traditional book selling channels, so 500 seemed to be a credible target.

This week we launch the 3rd edition of the book, with more than 3,000 individual downloads to date – as well as hundreds of additional copies that have been shared among crisis practitioners, academics and students.

The soaring popularity of ‘The New Rules of Crisis Management’ has made it THE guide to crisis management in the digital age.

The book’s credibility is underlined by the industry recognition it has received, including ‘Best Publication’ at the prestigious Washington DC PRSA/Thoth Awards in 2018.

The 3rd edition is now available, with four new chapters written by esteemed crisis leaders:

  • Tilden Katz of FTI Consulting writes about the impact of the changes on the so-important working relationship between attorneys and crisis practitioners.
  • Harlan Teller, CMO at Northern Arizona University, examines the challenges facing Higher Education in managing issues and crises.
  • Scott Farrell of Golin makes the case that effective crisis response means balancing the human touch with technology.
  • Sarah Tyre of Weber Shandwick assesses one of the greatest risks faced by every organization in the country, cybersecurity.
